Drinking alcohol is a common activity for many people, and the consumption data for the U.S. proves that point. Americans consumed 7.8 billion gallons of alcohol in 2018. If you find that astounding, Californians consumed 83.25 gallons of alcohol in 2019, according to Statista. In fact, the state ranked the highest in the amount of alcohol drunk.
There are 138.5 million people in the country who use alcohol. More than 61 million are binge drinkers, and 17.7 million are heavy drinkers, as reported on the 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
California, one of the largest and most populated states in the country, is no stranger to the incredible amount of alcohol consumed or the devastating effects that it has on its residents. The National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics reports that California has the highest number of alcohol-related deaths in the country. Of those:
- 11,026 annual deaths are due to excessive alcohol use
- 60% of deaths are due to chronic causes, such as alcohol use disorder (AUD), otherwise known as alcoholism.
- 84.3% of the deaths are from those who are 35 years old or older.
Alcohol is a major factor in the deaths of thousands of young people under age 21 every year in the U.S. The causes of death are attributed to motor vehicle crashes, homicides, alcohol overdose, injuries, drowning, and suicides. This creates a heavy toll on everyone involved, from family to law enforcement and emergency service personnel.
San Bernardino County, where Redlands is located, is also reeling from alcohol abuse and its consequences. The county wellness indicator reflects that in 2019, 11 percent of all serious collisions in the county involved alcohol.
Unfortunately, alcohol-involved collisions claimed 77 lives, and there was an 18% increase in alcohol admissions to substance use treatment centers in the county.
Alcohol abuse damages more than just your personal mental and physical health. It damages your finances, livelihood, and relationships, and it can end your life. California Highlands Vista is near Redlands and provides professional, licensed alcohol rehab and detox.

How long is rehab?
How long you spend in rehab is based on several factors. These include how long you have been drinking, how much alcohol you consumed before coming to us, and your mental and physical health needs, to name a few. The National Institute on Drug Abuse learned from research that three months is the recommended time in rehab for addiction treatment to be truly effective. We don’t advise that you rush your treatment because the time you spend in it will greatly benefit you when it is completed. Also, consider that the time you are in rehab is time away from the stressors of life and their triggers. You deserve the time in rehab that you need, and you should take it.
